Symptoms
Erection problems are very common and become more common as men get older particularly in men over 40. It can be a distressing symptom but can resolve itself. You should see a GP if it keeps happening.
Causes
- Stress
- Tiredness
- Anxiety
- Drinking too much alcohol
Other causes are:
- Narrowing of penis blood vessels, high blood pressure, high cholesterol
- Hormone problems
- Side effects of prescribed medication
Treatments
Treatment depends on the cause. These can include:
- Medication to lower blood pressure or cholesterol
- Hormone replacement therapy
- Changes to prescribed medications in consultation with a doctor
- Injections
- Creams
- Physiotherapy
- Vacuum devices
- Surgical implants
- Medication to help maintain an erection (such as Viagra (sildenafil), which can be bought in a pharmacy after initial consultation with the pharmacist or similar medication which have to be prescribed by a doctor.)
Other changes may also help including:
- Losing weight if you are overweight
- Stopping smoking
- Reducing your intake of alcohol
- Eating a healthy diet
- Taking daily exercise
- Reducing stress or anxiety
- Stopping cycling for a while if you cycle more than 3 hours per week
