Minor Ailments
Many people who consult their doctor for common conditions could be treated effectively by a community pharmacist. Pharmacists are trained to deal with common conditions, offer advice and recommend over the counter products. They may also refer patients to other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
Minor Ailments is a health service which is free of charge and which authorises the pharmacist to provide prescription treatment to a patient for a range of minor ailments following a confidential consultation. These are:
- Acne
- Athlete’s foot
- Diarrhoea
- Haemorrhoids
- Head lice
- Groin itch
- Threadworms
- Vaginal thrush
- Ear Wax
- Mouth Ulcers
- Oral Thrush
- Scabies
- Verrucae
For certain treatments, eligibility criteria apply and if the problem is serious and can’t be treated in the pharmacy, the pharmacist will refer the patient to their doctor.
